Colin Daynes Joins BFL, Faces Dwyer for the title

BFL Staff – Competition in Battlefield Fight League’s professional welterweight division will surely heat up in 2013 with the addition of Olympic-level wrestler, Colin Daynes (4-0 PRO MMA), who represented Team Canada at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and recently signed a multi-fight contract with B.C.’s most active MMA organization.

His promotional debut will be a title fight in Penticton, B.C. against reigning champion Matt Dwyer (4-1 PRO MMA) on February 16 at BFL 21.

After a week of rumors about a potential deal, BFL President Jay Golshani confirmed the signing Monday.
“Yes, it’s official,” Golshani said. “Colin Daynes did sign with BFL. Daynes is an Olympic Level wrestler and arguably one of the best wrestlers in all of mixed martial arts. We are all very excited about the addition of Colin Daynes, Leo Xavier, David Kennedy and Stu Deleurme to our already star studded pro welterweight roster in 2013.”

Colin Daynes grew up in southern Ontario, where he was recently inducted into the Windsor-Essex Sports Hall of Fame. As a champion wrestler at the provincial and national levels and with success, also, on the international stage, Daynes has certainly done right by Bill Hogarth, the high school wrestling coach Daynes credits with providing his first push toward greatness on the mats.

Today, Daynes coaches many of the best MMA fighters around to improve their wrestling and he has another new coach of his own in Langley, B.C.: two-time Pan-Am gold medallist and three-time black belt world champion in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, not to mention former DREAM Featherweight and Bantamweight champion, Bibiano Fernandes (12-3 PRO MMA).

These two grappling gurus sharpen each others respective games in the gym. With Bibiano having recently returned to international competition in MMA after a brief hiatus, it seems Daynes has also decided to return to activity after a much longer absence of over two years. Just don’t expect him to ease his way back into the cage. With submission stoppages in half of his wins and having never even seen the third round, this is one wrestler who clearly does not play for position.

Still, Daynes will have his hands full with current, reigning BFL welterweight champion Matt Dwyer.

No stranger to the promotion or its fans, Dwyer has competed ten times for the BFL both as an amateur and as a professional, winning seven fights by stoppage, with six coming in the first round. The only blemish on his professional record came to current Bellator FC fighter Marcus Aurellio (6-2 PRO MMA, 4-0 BFL), but Dwyer has won twice since then and recently claimed the BFL 170lb. title with a first-round TKO of Ryan Chiappe (9-8 PRO MMA, 3-1 BFL) at BFL 19 on November 9, 2012, also in Penticton, B.C.

Matt Dwyer knows a true champion is ready and willing to face all contenders to his crown, but he had better be prepared to face an opponent with world-class physical abilities and a vast well of knowledge from which to draw in Colin Daynes this February 16.

Also competing in the welterweight division at BFL 21, Ryan Chiappe will face Mark Dobie (4-3 PRO MMA, 2-1 BFL) in a fight with clear title implications.
