Top 3 Most Anticipated Match-Ups at BFL5 “Duel”

Top 3 Most Anticipated Match-Ups at BFL5 “Duel” January 15, 2011

BFL 5:  Battlefield “Duel” is approaching quickly with only 18  days of waiting time left until some of the most important and stylistically sound match ups take place live from the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, British Columbia.

Besides the Welterweight and Featherweight title fights, in our opinion, these are the top three not to be missed fights of BFL 5…

1)      Jeremy Kennedy (3-1) vs. Oren Hanscomb(4-2)-Hanscomb is making his 2nd appearance in the Battlefield cage, coming of an impressive unanimous decision victory over Ryan Ince at BFL 4.  Hanscomb is the current Extreme MMA Featherweight Champion and is looking to make a statement out of well respected Kennedy and move into BFL’s Featherweight title contention.   Standing in Hanscomb’s way is a 18 year old dangerous grappler from WestCoast BJJ who is also looking for a big win to boost him up BFL’s Featherweight Rankings.  Kennedy  who has finished 3 of his 4 opponents within the first round is coming off an impressive first round submission victory over Jordan Manning.   Hanscomb has been more than a handful for his previous opponents with his superior kickboxing and top notch clinch game.  Kennedy will likely try to take this fight to the mat where he should have a clear edge in grappling.  Stylistically, this should be one of the most interesting fights ever in the Battlefield cage.   With top Battlefield featherweight contenders American Tristan Storrs and Kelowna’s Chris Day set to make appearances at BFL 6 on March 19th, and the Featherweight Title fight Between Mangat and Delerume set to headline  BFL 5, Kennedy/Hanscomb fight will setup a very interesting picture for the future of Battlefield’s Featherweight division.

2)      Bryce Gougeon (2-0-2) vs. Stuart Deleurme (3-1) Battlefield fans last saw Stu Deleurme in action at BFL4 were he stopped Ben Cote via TKO early in the 2nd round.  Deleurme is a very accomplished grappler, similar to Gougeon’s last opponent Ryan Christopher.  Christopher had Gougeon in all kinds of trouble on the mat in their last bout.  Look for Deleurme to close the distance with Gougeon and take this fight to his comfort zone.  Bryce Gougeon, who is best known for his controversial fights inside the Battlefield cage, is coming off back to back no-contest fights against Deveron Roller and Ryan Christopher.  Gougeon has shown decent stand-up and very good take down defence in his prior bouts.  While both guys are in great shape and match each other in strength, Deleurme should have an edge on the mat while Gougeon should be the superior striker.   With Matt Dwyer set to headline BFL6 in a catch weight superfight while waiting for a Welterweight title shot and current champ Jacen Brooks looking to Join Battlefield’s pro circuit after his BFL 5 title fight, the winner of Geougeon/Deleurme will be right in the mix for a Welterweight title shot.

3)      Jer Kornelson(1-1) vs. Jesse Wierzboski (2-0) Wierzboski Joins Battlefield after dominating performances in smaller promotions including his latest and most convincing victory over Chad Miller at the XFC promotion in Prince George B.C.  The Revolution fight team product is very quick and agile for his size and packs a very exciting well rounded attack.  Kornelson is no stranger to facing undefeated-top level competition.   In his last outing, at BFL 3, Kornelson showed huge heart and great cardio to rally and finish previously undefeated Dave Ferguson midway through the 2nd round.  Kornelson who is very poise and extremely strong, should give Wierzboski the first real test of his young career.  Wierzboski/Kornelson fight should set up a very intriguing feature bout against either one of Battlefield’s top 2 ranked undefeated Middleweights Micah Brakefield or Justin Lansing.
